After ADHD diagnosis

What Happens After an ADHD Diagnosis in the UK?

What may happen after an ADHD diagnosis in the UK, including feedback, reports, medication pathways, therapy, workplace or education support and follow-up.

Direct answerAn ADHD diagnosis is the start of planning, not the end of assessment. Useful next steps may include understanding the report, practical strategies, psychological support, workplace or education adjustments and, if wanted and appropriate, a separate medical discussion about medication.

Make sure the diagnosis is explained

Feedback should connect the diagnostic conclusion to the person’s actual history and functioning. Ask about strengths, co-occurring needs, limitations in the evidence and which difficulties may need support even if they are not explained by ADHD alone.

Use the report selectively

A report can be shared with a GP, education provider, university, employer or other professional when useful. Consider what information is necessary for the purpose and remember that another organisation makes its own decisions about support or treatment.

Medication is a separate medical pathway

NICE includes medication among ADHD management options for some people, but prescribing requires an appropriately qualified medical professional and consideration of physical health, benefits, risks and monitoring. A psychological diagnostic report does not itself provide medication.

Psychological and practical support

Support may focus on planning, task initiation, emotional regulation, sleep routines, relationships, self-understanding and adapting environments. The most useful plan is individual rather than a generic list of ADHD tips.

Work and education

Some people may meet the legal definition of disability and may be entitled to reasonable adjustments. The exact legal framework differs in Northern Ireland from Great Britain, and adjustments depend on disadvantage and context rather than diagnosis alone.

Common questions

Do I have to take medication after diagnosis?

No. Management is individual and medication is one possible option, not a requirement.

Can I ask for workplace adjustments?

Yes, you can discuss support. Legal entitlement depends on disability law, the effect on day-to-day functioning and what is reasonable in the circumstances.

Should I send the full report to everyone?

Not necessarily. Share clinical information thoughtfully and according to the purpose for which it is needed.
