Start with patterns, not labels
Useful preparation includes examples of attention, impulsivity, activity level, organisation, emotional regulation and day to day impact. The strongest information describes when difficulties happen, when they do not, how long they have been present and what support has already been tried.
Why school information is useful
ADHD assessment considers functioning across settings. Teacher or SENCO information can therefore be important, particularly where school is a major part of the child’s week. A single teacher questionnaire should not be treated as the whole assessment, and differences between home and school need clinical interpretation.
Development and alternative explanations
The assessor may ask about pregnancy and birth, milestones, learning, language, sleep, anxiety, mood, trauma, physical health, family history and other neurodevelopmental differences. This is not to make the process unnecessarily broad; it helps distinguish ADHD from experiences that can look similar.
What parents can bring
Bring relevant school reports, previous assessments, medication information, examples of support plans and any records that describe development. If documents are missing, say so. The assessment should record limitations rather than imply evidence exists when it does not.
After the assessment
Feedback should explain the conclusion, supporting evidence, uncertainties and practical recommendations. If ADHD is diagnosed and medication is being considered, prescribing is a separate medical pathway.

Does my child need school reports for an ADHD assessment?
School information is often valuable, but the exact evidence needed depends on the child and pathway. Discuss missing records before booking.
Can ADHD and autism be considered together?
Yes, when both are reasonable clinical questions. A combined pathway may avoid forcing overlapping difficulties into one explanation too early.
Does a diagnosis automatically create school support?
No. Support decisions depend on needs, educational context and the relevant legal or local process.
