Why ADHD and autism can overlap
Executive-function difficulties, overwhelm, social fatigue, intense interests, sensory needs and emotional dysregulation can occur in different ways across ADHD, autism and other conditions. Similar outward experiences may have different underlying patterns.
When combined assessment may be efficient
A combined pathway may reduce duplicated history-taking when both questions are already well founded. It can also help clinicians interpret apparent contradictions, for example, novelty-seeking alongside a strong need for predictability, within the person’s wider developmental history.
What evidence should still be separate
The ADHD question requires evidence about developmental onset, symptoms and impairment. The autism question requires evidence about social communication and restricted or repetitive patterns across development. A combined service should be able to explain how evidence supports each conclusion.
What happens if only one diagnosis is supported
A combined assessment does not predetermine two diagnoses. The outcome may support ADHD, autism, both, neither, or identify uncertainty that needs further work. Feedback should explain why.
Cost and pathway
The Focused Care Psychology UK combined ADHD and autism assessment fee is £1,750. The exact appointment arrangement and evidence plan are agreed according to clinical need and suitability.
Common questions
Is a combined assessment better than two separate assessments?
Not always. It is useful when both questions are clinically relevant; otherwise a focused assessment may be more proportionate.
Does having ADHD make autism more likely?
ADHD and autism can co-occur, but one diagnosis does not establish the other.
Can a combined assessment lead to medication?
Medication is a separate medical prescribing decision and is not guaranteed by a diagnostic report.
