Private ADHD Assessment UK: Questions Before You Book

A practical UK guide to choosing a private ADHD assessment, including clinician credentials, developmental evidence, reports, fees and medication questions.

Direct answerA good private ADHD assessment should be a full clinical assessment, not a screening test sold as a diagnosis. Before booking, check who will assess you, what evidence is considered, what the report includes and whether the pathway fits the purpose for which you need it.

What should a private ADHD assessment include?

The core question is whether ADHD diagnostic criteria are met after considering developmental history, current symptoms, impairment across settings and reasonable alternative explanations. A structured interview and questionnaires can contribute, but neither should be treated as a stand-alone diagnostic test.

Check the clinician and the scope of the service

Ask which regulated professional will take clinical responsibility for the assessment and whether their registration and competence are appropriate to the work. A provider should also be clear about age range, complexity, risk, co-occurring conditions and circumstances in which another professional or service may be needed.

Developmental evidence matters

ADHD is neurodevelopmental, so assessment looks back as well as at current difficulties. School reports can be useful but are not the only possible evidence. Family information, historical records, earlier clinical notes and a detailed developmental interview may all contribute. Missing records should be handled transparently rather than ignored.

Reports, medication and NHS use

A private report can be useful for personal understanding, education, work or onward healthcare, but no private provider can guarantee that another NHS service, employer, university or prescriber will accept a report for every purpose. Medication is a separate medical decision made by an appropriately qualified prescriber.

Price and value

The Focused Care Psychology UK fee for an ADHD assessment is £650. Compare providers on the whole pathway: assessment method, feedback, report, follow-up, clarity about limitations and what happens if the evidence does not support ADHD, not only on headline price.

Common questions

Can I book a private ADHD assessment without a GP referral?

Private services can often be contacted directly. GP involvement may still be useful or necessary for physical health, medication, risk or onward NHS care.

Is an online questionnaire enough to diagnose ADHD?

No. Screening questionnaires can identify possible ADHD traits but do not replace a full clinical assessment.

Will a private ADHD diagnosis automatically lead to medication?

No. Medication requires a separate medical assessment and prescribing decision.
