Private adult autism assessment UK
A respectful, developmentally informed private autism assessment for adults, considering communication, sensory experience, routines, relationships, masking, strengths and current impact.

Not a diagnosis based on one score
Assessment begins with the person’s reasons for seeking clarity, their language preferences, support needs and what they hope the process will help them understand.
- Clear question and intended report use
- Developmental and current information
- Functional impact and strengths
- Alternative and co occurring explanations
- Feedback, limitations and practical recommendations
Suitability is assessed first
Online work is not suitable in every situation. Age, communication, risk, complexity, jurisdiction and the purpose of the report all influence the appropriate route.
See fee principles and payment informationWho this pathway may, and may not, fit
This pathway may be appropriate when
- The person wants structured diagnostic clarification
- Development, communication, sensory experience and patterns across life can be explored
- Masking, overlap and alternative explanations need careful consideration
- An online pathway is clinically and practically suitable
Another route may be safer or more appropriate when
- Immediate crisis or acute risk needs urgent services
- The required assessment must be delivered by a specific multidisciplinary or statutory team
- The intended recipient requires a format that has not been agreed in advance
- Online assessment would not provide sufficient or reliable information
Four stages with a clear purpose
Understand the person’s question
Assessment begins with the person’s reasons for seeking clarity, their language preferences, support needs and what they hope the process will help them understand.
Explore development and current life
The pathway may include developmental interview, clinical conversation, questionnaires, observation and information from a relative or other source, with consent.
Consider masking and overlap
Current presentation may reflect years of conscious compensation. ADHD, anxiety, trauma, language, learning and other factors should also be considered.
Provide meaningful feedback
Feedback should explain the evidence and uncertainty, recognise strengths and suggest realistic changes across home, work, education and relationships.
Agree the output before the work begins
Different reports may be needed for personal understanding, a GP, education, employment or another professional. The practice does not promise that every third party will accept every report. The purpose, recipient and requested evidence should be clarified in advance.
Where medical treatment, legal evidence or statutory processes are involved, separate requirements may apply.
Information for referring professionals
Autism assessment for women and girls
Some women and girls describe years of camouflaging, rehearsing social responses or managing sensory and social demands through substantial effort. These experiences can be relevant, but they should be explored individually rather than assumed.
Read the women & girls assessment guideLook beyond stereotypes
Diagnosis depends on a comprehensive assessment of development, current functioning, impairment, strengths, co occurring needs and alternative explanations, not gender stereotypes or a screening score alone.

Common questions
Do adults need a GP referral?
A private enquiry can normally be made directly. NHS referral routes and local availability vary, so current local pathways should be checked with a GP or the relevant NHS service.
What if nobody is available to describe childhood?
Assessment can still be discussed. The clinician considers available records, the person’s account and other evidence, while being transparent about limitations.
What is masking?
Masking refers to conscious or learned efforts to hide, compensate for or manage autistic traits in order to meet social expectations. It can affect how obvious traits appear in a brief appointment.
Is assessment only about difficulties?
No. A balanced assessment should identify strengths, preferred communication, sensory needs, interests, coping strategies and environments that enable the person to function well.

Private adult autism assessment in the United Kingdom
Private adult autism assessment is available through Focused Care Psychology for clients in the United Kingdom. The published fee is from £1,250. The pathway is structured around developmental and current evidence, feedback and the agreed written report output. A free 15 minute consultation is available before booking. Psychologists do not prescribe medication.
Can an adult autism assessment be completed online?
Remote appointments can form part of some adult autism assessment pathways where clinically appropriate. The assessor still needs sufficient developmental and current evidence and may recommend a different format if online assessment would limit reliability.
